Mendes Wood DM

(São Paulo)

For Art Collaboration Kyoto 2026, Mendes Wood DM presents a group exhibition exploring connections between Kyoto and São Paulo, bringing together artistic practices from the twentieth century to the present. Centered on Tomie Ohtake (1913, Kyoto, Japan–2015, São Paulo, Brazil), the presentation considers transculturation, diaspora, spirituality, and the relationship between culture and nature. Additional participating artists include Patricia Ayres, Sanam Khatibi, Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, Daniel Steegmann Mangrané, Solange Pessoa, Giangiacomo Rossetti, Marina Perez Simão, and Leah Ke Yi Zheng.

Ohtake’s Untitled (1996) exemplifies the mature language of one of Brazil’s most important postwar abstract artists. Within a luminous golden field, a gently unfolding form creates a counterpoint to strict geometry, introducing lyricism, intuition, bodily movement, and emotional openness in a scale rarely seen in her work. Its organic movement and shifting light evoke an attentiveness to nature as a vital and continually changing presence.

Gallery Information

Mendes Wood DM was founded in São Paulo in 2010 by Felipe Dmab, Matthew Wood, and Pedro Mendes to exhibit international and Brazilian artists in a context conducive to critical dialogue and the cross-pollination of ideas. Inspired by a belief that artistic practices broaden the scope of human agency and have the power to change the world, the gallery cultivates a program premised on conceptualism, political resistance, and intellectual rigor. Central to the program is a concern for regional difference and individuation while still fostering cosmopolitanism and collaboration.
