“Making & Seeing”: Let’s Make Flags Never Seen Before

ACK Kids’ Programs consist of “making” and “seeing” activities.

The“making” program invites children to explore materials and tools alongside artists, using their hands to create something of their own. The “seeing” program encourages children to experience artworks through close observation, touring the venue while exchanging ideas with other participants.
Programs listed as “making” and “seeing” combine both experiences, allocating time for participants to tour the venue while carrying their creations in hand.

We will create flags unlike any others in the world. The instructor is artist Kawano Ai, who explores themes of memory and time through works rooted in dyeing and weaving. As you sew pieces of cloth together and draw lines with a sewing machine, your flag will gradually take on a shape uniquely your own. Once your flag is complete, hold it up and head to the venue. From this point on, you are the guide. Explore the booths, stop at works that catch your eye, and introduce them to everyone. The place where you and your flag stand may become a signpost for someone else. Experience the joy of making and the pleasure of discovery. As you walk through the venue with your flag held high, new paths will begin to emerge.

*If applications exceed capacity, participants will be selected by a draw.

Kawano Ai

Kawano completed an MA in Dyeing and Weaving at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2007. During her studies, she attended the Royal College of Art as an exchange student. After working as an art director for an advertising agency, she moved into art education and has held various positions including her current post as associate professor at Kyoto University of the Arts. Rooted in dyeing and textiles, her practice combines ceramics, glass, cloth, collected antiques, and photography in works that explore the memory of places and people, time, and shifting values. Major exhibitions include Toward the Lighthouse at the Tanabe City Museum of Art and the Kumanokodo Nakahechi Museum (2025); KOTOMONOTO: Foreign Objects, and—, the 14th edition of MOMAW Summer Museum Project at the Museum of Modern Art Wakayama (2024); Study: Osaka Kansai International Art Festival (2022); and Soft Territory at the Shiga Museum of Art, among others.
