Kyoto is a unique place that, while embodying the culture and aesthetic sensibilities cultivated over its long history, has consistently embraced new forms of expression and continued to evolve. KYOTO TSUTAYA BOOKS opened in 2023 with the aim of creating a “space where tradition and the cutting edge resonate” in this distinctive setting.
Now, as we mark our third anniversary, we are returning to our original concept and reexamining how we can present the question—“How can tradition and the cutting edge coexist, or even harmonize?”—in the context of the modern world.
Through the works of six artists who have spent many years exploring their own unique forms of expression and have established high critical acclaim, this exhibition presents a current state of contemporary art—one that references the accumulated legacy of the past while reinterpreting it from a present-day perspective, or through attempts to connect with the future.
