Kyoto Meetings

Raster

(Warsaw)

The presentation brings together three artists: Kyoto-based Kazuhito Tanaka, Berlin-based Slawomir Elsner, and Warsaw-based Janek Simon. Each of them explores the issue of representation in different ways, subjecting images to processes of deconstruction and reconstruction.
Tanaka, in his abstract compositions, confronts the photographic process with the painterly one, imitating hand-drawn color impastos through photochemical techniques. Elsner’s virtuoso drawings revive images from the past—in this case, paintings by Vincent van Gogh from Japanese collections. In these works, he plays with visual perception, while also engaging with memory and historical distance. Simon’s figures, produced with 3D printing, are the outcome of a neural network trained on several thousand images of non-academic figural sculptures from around the world, spanning antiquity to the present. His objects embody a utopian yet tangible vision of a hybrid, non-colonial, post-global aesthetic.
The works of these three artists are presented in a coherent, visually compelling sequence, offering diverse cultural perspectives and conceptual strategies for critiquing artistic representation.
