Timothy Hawkinson Gallery
（Los Angeles）
We will have a solo presentation of paintings by Alise Spinella. A Panamanian-American artist working in Los Angeles now, she spent formative years of her young life living in the Gion district of Kyoto, and in Koyasan among Shingon Buddhist priests. These early experiences greatly influenced her world view and the aesthetics of her paintings and drawings. She later graduated from UCLA with a degree in computer science before pursuing her deep interest in visual art at leading American art schools: the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for a BFA, followed by the legendary CalArts for an MFA.
In her newest works we witness the meditative moment after death, when something new is just beginning to form from fragments of the past: a kind of rebirth. Dust stitching together, microcosms connecting into patterns, fragile elements layering in delicate, tenuous balance. The intimate moment of renewed life gathering into being. These paintings are both contemplative and intuitive, with layers of color and line slowly revealing themselves over time.
Gallery Information
Timothy Hawkinson Gallery opened in December of 2022 with a restaging of Robert Barry’s 1969 Closed Gallery piece, a landmark of conceptual art. We strive to present artists making singular artworks. Works that make the world seem bigger, shed light on overlooked topics, or provoke greater awareness. We aim to position their work into both local and global discourses. An international and cross-generational mix of artists from different backgrounds, who have fully developed practices. Gallery artist Nani Chacon was in the Whitney Biennial this year, and Miller Robinson is in the current Carnegie International. Gallery artists Samantha Yun Wall and Rick Bartow have current solo exhibitions respectively at the Seattle Art Museum and the Portland Art Museum. Gallery artists have been included in past iterations of the Venice Biennale and Documenta.
Quality and courtesy are important.
