imura art gallery

(Kyoto)

imura art gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Shiro Tsujimura, one of Japan’s internationally renowned ceramic artists.
Entirely self-taught and without a master, Tsujimura has devoted his life to exploring and mastering the art of ceramics. For him, his way of making is inseparable from his way of living; his entire approach to life has become an essential element in the creation of his works.
With his own hands, Tsujimura cleared the mountains, brought in water, cultivated the earth, and built his own home. It is through creating from this very foundation of life, he says, that a consistent aesthetic and a continuous journey of exploration have emerged.
From this process naturally arose the central theme of Tsujimura’s lifelong practice: “intentionality without intention.” His work leaves us with a profound message, inviting us to reconsider the essence of things in the context of contemporary life.
Tsujimura is known, by himself as well as by those around him, for his extraordinary productivity. He has created an astonishing number of works, many of which have been exposed to the elements over time, gradually acquiring an increasingly rich and nuanced patina. Their profound surfaces and landscapes seem to encapsulate the vast natural environment of Nara itself.
This, in many ways, reflects Tsujimura’s own way of living alongside nature.
His artistic practice extends far beyond ceramics. Over the years, he has continued to devote himself to a wide range of freely evolving forms of expression, including calligraphy and painting, all of which have received equal recognition.
At imura art gallery, the exhibition will focus exclusively on works selected personally by Tsujimura himself, presenting a selection of his ceramics, paintings, and calligraphy.
