ARTRO is pleased to present He Xiangyu’s two concurrent solo exhibitions at its Meiji-era warehouse-turned-gallery and Manshu-in, a noble Buddhist monastery dated from the 8th century. Based between Beijing and Berlin, He has continued to examine an array of personal, social and political themes through material manipulation and the reconstruction of cultural signifiers. He’s first solo presentation in Japan in five years and his first in Kyoto, these exhibitions will premiere his new works, including a series of photographs capturing post-protest scenes that he witnessed in the last eight years in Berlin and sculptures created in Jingdezhen, a region that has been a major site for ceramic production in China for over one thousand years. Encompassing vestiges of memory from varied temporal and spatial contexts, the exhibitions will create a multilayered and unique dialogue with the architectural spaces imbued with rich history and tranquility.
