Nonaka-Hill was founded in 2018 in Los Angeles by Rodney and Takayoshi Nonaka-Hill.
Recognizing that art exhibition spaces of any scale and economy will, over time, provide a community with a matrix of new and long-lasting memories, Nonaka-Hill has endeavored to keep "Japan" as a connective presence in each of its 33 exhibitions to date. Working with emerging artists, established artists and with artist estates from Japan and its diaspora, alongside non-Japanese artists in curated group exhibitions, the gallery team has enjoyed the erratic shifts in self-education, exhibition presentation and public storytelling. Nonaka-Hill represents several artists as primary gallery partnering with other galleries for exhibitions in the US and abroad.
Located in a typical California "mini-mall" building, the gallery's welcoming all-glass storefront façade inspires theatricality in exhibitions, breaking from the "white cube" standard. In September of 2022, Nonaka-Hill opened a second smaller gallery space located at 6917 Melrose Avenue, a short walk from the main space. Nonaka-Hill has participated in Art Basel Miami Beach and Felix Art Fair in Los Angeles. Appropriately, A.C.K. is Nonaka-Hill's first overseas art fair.
