In his work, Kaneuji assembles varied and multiform objects to create multilayered sculptures and installations. In 2023, Kaneuji started a new series of work, which he titled “POOOPOPOO.” Works in this series consist of complex stratified construction, for which the artist printed on thick or uneven materials, entwining matter and image, solid and smooth. Embedded in the work, Kaneuji uses images based on the work by Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella and Cy Twombly. Kaneuji creates spaces in which he mixes paint, photographic material, and objects.

Richard Pettibone became well known in the 60’s for his paintings that faithfully reproduce images of artworks by other artists on a small scale. In particular, he selected artists from the emerging Pop Art movement like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, whose work he saw published in art magazines. The small size of the paintings are faithful to the size of the images he saw in the magazines. Pettibone’s work was the foundation for appropriation art that expanded into the 1980s.

Kaneuji responds with his new group of “POOOPOPOO” artworks which are an homage to those representative artworks in the 60’s by Pettibone. Therefore, by combining Pettibone’s work, an artist who invented appropriation art in America in the 60s, with Kaneuji’s work, who develops appropriation art in a different context in Japan, we hope to contribute to a dialogue that will lead to an understanding of art history over the past 60 years.

Yumiko Chiba Associates was launched as an artist management office in 1998 in Tokyo, and has been organizing many contemporary art shows at the galleries and museums inside and outside of Japan. Opened a commercial gallery in 2010, the gallery has held many solo shows for the established artists; Jiro Takamatsu, Beat Streuli, along with other artists in the young generation. The gallery also represents the Estate of important artists in Japanese contemporary art history such as Jiro Takamatsu, Masafumi Maita and Katsuro Yoshida. The gallery has published many research booklets with critical essays, contributing to interpretations of artists in terms of art history. Relocated to Roppongi in 2022, the gallery also launched the Roppongi ArsCuria hub for artistic and critical discussion.

Castelli Gallery was founded by Leo Castelli in 1957. Considered the most influential art dealer of the Post-War period, Leo Castelli had a gift for discovering new talents. Under his leadership, the gallery became the epicenter of Pop Art, Minimal Art, Conceptual Art and Post-Minimal Art.
　
Since 1999, the gallery has been operated under the direction of Barbara Bertozzi Castelli. Ms. Bertozzi Castelli continues the gallery’s commitment to promoting the work of artists including Jasper Johns, Joseph Kosuth, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Morris, Richard Pettibone, and Keith Sonnier. The gallery maintains two exhibition spaces: an Upper East Side location at 18 East 77th Street, and 24 West 40th Street, across from Bryant Park.
