ACK Curates
※ACK Curates details will be announced in late summer 2024.
ACK Curates is a series of programs organized by ACK. Under a theme presented by the program director each year, it includes a “Public Program” exhibition, Kids’ Programs, ACK Talks, and others.
ACK Curates 2024 Theme “Resilience—for your own happiness”
We are living in an age of great complexity. While the information society has thrown diverse values into high relief, it is extremely difficult to discern the vast amount of information being disseminated. Similarly, in the art world, as artworks become increasingly diverse in form and their means of distribution more complex, it is no longer possible to speak of an artwork in terms of a single set of values. How can we find happiness and value for ourselves amidst an uncertain future in an age of diverse values?
ACK Curates is pleased to announce “Resilience” as this year’s theme. Resilience, the innate ability of human beings to overcome difficulties and recover through repeated inner dialogue and reflection, is a vital keyword for surviving in today’s complex society. In the midst of the dizzying flow of new information, each one of us must steadily and diligently repeat each day to create an environment where we can mutually express ourselves and respect one other without losing sight of our own senses of value. Maintaining an inner dialogue allows us to stay grounded and appreciate our own worldviews, while understanding the views of others. Resilience allows us to take into consideration the historical facets of art, and at the same time remain flexible to navigate the new world.
In Kyoto, the Gion Festival, which has a history of more than 1,000 years, is held every summer. Deriving from a ritual to pray for good health during a nationwide epidemic, the Gion Festival comprises a month-long series of rituals and events. That it has endured despite interruptions over the past 1,000 years to continue to captivate people from all over the world is due to the spirit of Kyoto’s inhabitants, who have preserved and passed on their history and culture to the next generation while changing to meet the needs of the times.
Aiming to become a complex platform with art as its starting point, the 2024 edition of ACK will take Kyoto as its stage to realize a fair that enables free contemplation between artists and galleries, exhibitions and educational programs that deal with diverse expressions and values, and talk programs that promote dialogue and discussion.
It is important to have moments of silence to reflect upon our own inner dialogue, and equally important to break the silence of uncertain times and express ourselves, to share what we have reflected upon and come to understand.
Through our collaborative spirit, we hope ACK will serve as a catalyst that passes on connections woven in this way with others to new generations living in the future, thus creating a more diverse art ecosystem and a society that will embrace it.
Yamashita Yukako, ACK Program Director
Public Program
A special exhibition using a wide variety of spaces in and around the ACK venues. This year’s guest curator, Arts Collective, establishes a curatorial theme responding to the ACK Curates 2024 theme “Resilience—for your own happiness” and presents various selected works.
Guest Curator: Arts Collective
Co-founded by curators André Chan and Chin-Yin Chong in 2018, Arts Collective is a curating platform based in Hong Kong. The collective’s practice resides in the intersection of contemporary art, cultural influences, and interdisciplinary connections. They were selected for the Emerging Curators Project at the Power Station of Art, Shanghai in 2018.
Chin-Yin Chong has previously worked at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, and Hong Kong Arts Centre, as well as experiences in galleries and various art projects in the Asian region. Working collectively and independently, Chong’s recent research explores artistic practices, transdisciplinary exchanges and collaborations. Chong was a curator-in-residence for the Delfina Foundation’s summer 2022 season.
André Chan’s curatorial work focuses on artists’ engagement with contemporary urban issues. His recent research is on the video games made by artists and exploring the fallacies within the modern tech world. Chan was selected for the Emerging Curators program by Para Site in Hong Kong in 2018, and has been recognized for his curatorial work through exhibitions and performances in various cities and institutions.
ACK Talks
ACK Talks is an international conversation series spanning diverse genres. A diverse range of talk programs will be held with the aim of building a community centered on culture and the arts. Details of the programs will be announced in September.
ACK Kids’ Programs
ACK will hold both workshops and tours for children with the aim to nurture the next generation, create an environment to encourage children to grow to love art, and to renew an awareness of the necessity of art education for the future. It offers participatory workshops that combine “seeing” through guided tours of the venue and “making” by actually working with hands to create artworks together with artists. In addition, a bilingual childcare service (operated by Rakuwakai Otowa Hospital) will be available for visitors with children from 3 months to 7 years old. Registration for the childcare service is scheduled to commence in mid-July.
ACK welcomes the following people as ambassadors to help spread the word about ACK to as many people as possible around the world.
