Tomio Koyama Gallery (Tokyo) and Each Modern (Taipei) are pleased to present a collaborative booth at Art Collaboration Kyoto. The presentation showcases the works of three distinguished Japanese artists—Masahiko Kuwahara, Hideaki Kawashima, Koji Nakazono—alongside Tseng ChienYing, one of the most representative contemporary ink artists from Taiwan.
Reflecting the shifting human desires related to our environment, Masahiko Kuwahara expressed a worldview that is at once hopeless and paradise-like, imbued with his childhood memories. Hideaki Kawashima portrays a spectrum of faces and melancholic, delicate eyes and expressions based on an obsessive self-consciousness experienced in his youth, changes in his own family, and an acute awareness of mortality. Koji Nakazono painted idiosyncratic sceneries, layering a multitude of motifs that include his unique figures, in which wavering motifs come to acquire images before dissolving into obscurity again.
Tseng ChienYing devotes himself to exploring traditional materials and painting languages, infusing them with the influences of Buddhist art, to create works that resonate with today’s complex desires, psychological needs, and collective consciousness of how humans express and assert themselves through gestures and appearances.
The works of these four artists delve into the fundamental themes of contemporary society, offering glimpses into the human condition, the nature of consciousness and desire, and the complexities of the human psyche in relation to the environment and collective communities. Our presentation aspires to bring out the viewers’ perspectives into these themes as explored through the artists’ works.

Tomio Koyama Gallery opened in 1996 in Saga-cho, Koto-ku, Tokyo. The gallery moved its location to Roppongi in 2016, followed by an additional new space in Tennozu in 2022. This year in November, the gallery is expecting to open another space in Kyobashi.
Since its opening the gallery has been participating in international art fairs, being the first point of introduction for young Japanese artists, and has generated a current that became a foundation of Japanese contemporary art. The gallery currently represents Kishio Suga, Mika Ninagawa, Hiroshi Sugito, Richard Tuttle, Sopheap Pich as well as holding exhibitions of ceramic artists. Introducing diverse artists from established figures to young talents, beyond distinctions of nationality or genre, Tomio Koyama Gallery aims at developing the contemporary art market with original perspectives.

The founder, Huang Yaji has been working as a critic and curator for a decade and developed profound insight of Asian art ecosystem. She established Each Modern in 2018, and committed to promoting Asian postwar and contemporary art by redefining Asian artists with enhanced value while bridging new international artists. In November 2023, the gallery moved to the current space in Taipei business district.
　
Rediscovering and exhibiting the value of artists in art history is one of the gallery’s greatest achievements in first three years.Meanwhile, the gallery succeeded in directing more attention of young generations to Asian postwar arts, guiding them to embrace contemporary art. Key gallery programs cover prominent artists including hyperrealism artist Hilo Chen, the first avant-garde artist Li YuanChia, important post-war Taiwan artist Chen TingShih, the iconic “Provoke” photographers Nakahira Takuma and Moriyama Daido, Japan female photographer Ishiuchi Miyako, key member of Mono-ha Suga Kishio, and Taiwanese post-war photographer Teng NanKuang.
　
Each Modern also represents other generation artists from various regions. Since 2022, the gallery invites multiple international artists into the program to raise their Asia profile.
